DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTICS AND IMPLANTOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTICS AND IMPLANTOLOGY

About department

The mission of the Department of Periodontology is to provide excellence and innovation in education, patient care and scientific discovery in our specialized field. Since its origination from a single hydraulic dental chair and a handful of dental personnel in the general OPD of the medical college, the single-minded aim is to provide patient care with utmost precision and compassion as well as educate them about the importance of personal oral hygiene.

The department has witnessed awe inspiring changes in terms of both, work force as well as structure. It is now a well-ventilated sprawling space on the third floor of the college building with well segregated sections for patient reception, counselling and treatment and a completely different area dedicated to academics.
It has a fully air conditioned undergraduate as well as postgraduate section complete with 25 dental chairs equipped with all instruments, and materials required for comprehensive dental care of the patients. The post graduate clinic is bolstered with cutting edge facilities including soft tissue LASER and electrocautery. Advanced periodontal regenerative procedures are regularly carried out with the help of an adequately stocked department store with materials including synthetic bone graft materials, regenerative and barrier membranes along with avant-garde centrifuge machine. The department also boasts of a state of art Implant clinic meant for not only implant placements but also soft and hard tissue augmentation procedures for optimum functional as well as aesthetic restoration of the patients, the primary goal of the department. The infection control is ensured by a separate sterilization room following a stringent protocol for care of instruments.
The process of teaching and learning is the heart of education. With this in mind the department has remarkable infrastructural facilities and a dedicated teaching faculty meant to benefit the students to the fullest. Integrated department library has a vast collection of books, student library dissertations and journals and seminars. The department has a state of the art seminar room with all the audio-visual facilities which enhances the education experience of the students.

Other Activities

Training Program

Department of Periodontics and implantology offers both undergraduate and postgraduate training programs.
The undergraduate training program starts from 3rd year BDS, consisting of regular theory and clinical sessions. In the clinical posting the students learn to take comprehensive patient case history, gain perfection in manual and ultrasonic scaling procedures as well as minor surgical procedures.
The DCI curriculum is strictly followed for the PG training program. Postgraduate students are exposed to regular chairside short case and long case discussions. They gain priceless clinical acumen in various periodontal surgical procedures ranging from routine flap surgeries to advanced periodontal plastic surgeries, hard tissue, soft tissue regenerative procedures and implant surgery. The PG students follow a rigid schedule of seminars, journal clubs to improve their academic skills. The postraguate dissertation, short term trials and case studies conducted in the department plays vital role in training the students about research activities.
The postgraduate students are encouraged to gain valuable experience by regular CDE programs held in the department.
The Training of Teachers program conducted by the department in collaboartion with Indian Society of Periodontology provided valuable insights to the students for their role as academicians after the MDS curriculum. Oral hygiene day celebration witnessed lectures on new modalities in periodontal therapy to encourage undergraduate students to take up periodontics as their subject for postgraduation.
The postgraduate students are encouraged to attend national conferences and PG convention to stay upto date with the latest developments in the field of periodontics.
